Further than the furthest thing, young vic, 2014

This show was a good’un. I was producing work for the schools strand at the Young Vic before moving over to Neighbourhood Theatre (Two Boroughs back in the day), and this show was made with three local ‘special schools.’ The cast were autistic primary school students and Profound and Multiple Learning Disabled young people. The show was immersive and experiential. We staged it in the Maria, the Young Vic’s second largest studio, and created different ‘rooms’ so that the audience could experience different activities, games and stories with the cast, going on a journey through space with them. We had long conversations with the carers and teachers of the PMLD young people around the ethics of participation and representation around whether or not to have them present in the show. In the end we were led by them: those cast members who responded joyfully to an audience were included.
