the curtain, Young Vic, 2016

This was the last show I made before I left the Young Vic after having my second child. In fact I was due the day of the first show. It felt fitting that we flooded the Clare (the studio theatre it was in) with water. Many jokes were made abut make-shift birthing pools. The Curtain was made with a mixed cast of disabled people who had aphasia as a result of stroke, and with local community members who were not disabled. We worked with language and non-verbal communication, and the set was designed - in collaboration with the cast - to provide an obstacle to be overcome, with physical supports built in. I loved singing with this cast, I loved sitting down and scribing for them, I loved spending time with them and dreaming up ways to access and include their stories. I am at my happiest when making with a community, and sitting with my bare feet in the water of a pool in a theatre, laughing with the cast, felt pretty perfect, actually.
